How to enable middle click on Microsoft Touch Mouse

microsoft touch mouse 1 300x208 How to enable middle click on Microsoft Touch Mouse

I’ve recently received the Microsoft Touch Mouse and I was disappointed by Microsoft that didn’t really unleash the true potential of this little cute technological gadget.
What I was really missing was:

  • The middle click functionality;
  • The left and right click without using the physical button, which I’ve found quite difficult pressing;

If you’re missing this functionalities too, you are in the right place, because here it is the solution, free of charge. Check you’ve installed the .NET framework V4 and select the right version for your system:

31/12/2011: New 1.2 version released: added detection of gestures and middle click recognition.

Features:

  • Left and right click can be done by tapping respectively on left and right touch area.
  • Middle click can be done by tapping simultaneously both left and right touch area.
  • You can have a finger on one side and can still perform a click on the other side.
  • If you swype in any direction to scroll a page, the program detects it and doesn’t do any click.

It would be great, if you could create an app what only enhance the mouse with the middle click feature…
This tap auto clicks thing is kinda hard for me to get useful.
Although the app is great, congratulations.

The middle click can be done by tapping the left and right touch area together. New improvements will be done and a new configuration panel is underway.
Please give feedback of how to modify the application.

It would be awesome if we could disable certain features. For instance, I only want the middle click functionality, not the “touch-click” which causes far to many unwanted clicks while scrolling.

I am having difficulty installing it. I confirmed . NET Framework 4 is installed. unzipped the files and ran the .exe but nothing happened…. what should I be expecting?

It should be running in background. Try to do a middle click by tapping (not clicking) the left and right area of the touch-zone. You can also use tapping instead of clicking to do left and right clicks.

If it would respond to clicks only, it would be very useful. But tapping instead of clicking is a downgrade to me, too much random accident “taps” here and there happen all the time.

It’s not working for me either. As I click to run the Enhancer the program initiates and then closes (always in background). I’ve tried to reinstall .NET Framework, also tried to run the Enhancer at startup, but the same happened. Any ideas?

First off, thanks for making this neat little program J5.  It definitely adds several features that should’ve been in MS’ drivers.

For me the x64 (running Win 7 x64) version would give the same results (closing after running) throwing a DllNotFoundException error.  The x86 version on the other hand would work.

The error the x64 version is throwing when it closes:

Look in the task manager. If under “Processes” there is “MSTM_Enhance”, then the program is running. If otherwise it’s not running you should run this debug version that can identify you specific issue:

Great application! Thank you very much for your efforts! It works as intended with my x64 windows 7.

Like some others, I also came here in search for the middle-click functionality. If you could make the touch-click functionality optional, that would be awesome. Of course, it would be perfect if middle-clicking is actually done with “clicking” both buttons (instead of touching).

Also, I’m an AutoCAD user and panning in ACAD requires the user to keep pressing the middle mouse button. Could this be implemented as well?

Once again, thanks for your great efforts and for this beautiful favor to humanity (or at least the portion of humanity who owns the touch mouse :)

    Cordially.

in my opinion it is possible to activate middle click by physical clicking both buttons simultaneously. there is only one physical button but it recogniese which side of mouse you are touching. So touching left and right side at the same time and then physicaly pressing button could be a signal to middle click instead of tapping.

Thank you so much, I saw this as a missed opportunity from the moment I bought the mouse. You really did the work for M$. I love the new smooth functionality.

I would appreciate a way to finetune the sensitivity, length of finger movement before detecting scroll… Even a simple ini text file with values would be perfect.

    Hi.
Because it’s brilliant to recognize this need, I donated (you may see it under “ibforsberg …”

Alas below is my computer’s information, because it does not work for me. I’ve uncompressed the .ZIP file, got a .EXE and two .DLL’s, double-click on MSTM_Enhance.exe. I see it show up in Task Manager, under the Processes tab, but it just shows up there for a few seconds and then disappears from the list. If I’m not looking at Task Manager I see nothing happen at all except the mouse-cursor “hourglass” for a few seconds.
———— I’ve tried both the 64 bit version, then the x86 version.
———— My PC doesn’t seem to be exotic in any way.
———— Indeed I did download and install the .NET framework V4
———— Indeed I did reboot and try it all yet again.

    Help!  :-)

    Here’s my PC info:
    Windows 7 Professional
    Service Pack 1
    Rating: 4.1 Windows Experience Index
    Processor: Intel(R) Core (TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @d205c66cb7f7d0ed3c8ebef3c90fd13a:disqus  2.66 GHz  2.67 GHz
    RAM: 8.00 GB
    System type: 64-bit Operating System

Thanks for anything you can do, or suggest.

Thanks a lot for replying. I have already finished the following pieces,

          1. Create installers using Inno Setup (x64/x86).
          2. Add a notify icon so that when the utility is running users can see it in system tray.
          3. Add menu items to the notify icons so that middle-click and touch-over-click (that’s how I call it) can be turned on/off independently.

The source code is released under MIT/X11 license, at GitHub, https://github.com/lextm/touchmousemate

I named it as Touch Mouse Mate. A CodePlex portal is still being setup to include discussion board, and issue tracking.

          http://touchmousemate.codeplex.com (not yet online)

In the coming weeks I will try to implement the following,

          * Drag/drop support for touch-over-click. Though we can now use touch instead of clicking for left/right clicking, when we want to drag windows or select a few words in a sentence we still need to click physically. If we can simulate the key up events in a better way then this should be resolved.

          * other improvements

      http://touchmouseplus.codeplex.com/
Touch Mouse Plus is another MS Touch Mouse middle click inspired by this and Touch Mouse Mate.  It lacks the tapping ability for left and right mouse clicks.  In turn, you can physically press a spot just right of the middle of the touch area roughly for a middle click.
I prefer that over tapping both sides, personally, as it means I have less of a chance of accidentally usinging the 2-finger gestures by accident.  And, that I can hold down the middle mouse button if needed.
